Performance for young activists
What do you want to say? Who do you want to say it to? How can performance and the creative arts help get your ideas heard?
VOICE! was a project for people aged 12-18 to explore possibilities for social, political and environmental action in a safe and inclusive space.
Artist-led workshops provided a safe space for young people to discuss the things they care about and look at how to use drama, sound, visual art & words to get their ideas across and effect change.
“It was really nice to just talk with people about your opinions and all of the activities we did were fun as well.”Young artist, Y7
The series was co-created with attendees and tailored to cover topics and media they were most interested in. We invited professional artists to help the young artists develop their skills and ideas, and most importantly create a platform for discussion in which everyone could have their voice heard.
“It was a great opportunity to meet new people.”Young artist, Y7
“We have voices, and we will use them.
We want change and we want it now, now, now!”Lyrics created by the VOICE group
Over the course of 6 workshops, the group explored dance, physical theatre, music, visual art, podcasting, and film-making. They learned about different forms of protest and how the arts can be used to promote positive change in the world. Issues covered included climate change, conservation, equality and LGBTQ rights. The project culminated in the production of their own film.
“I feel like this has been a really good chance to act on all of the things we said we believed in. It would be amazing if this or something like this were to continue in the future.”Young artist, Y7
